Environment setting people live in (land, resources, climate) · Language how people communicate · Survival Needs shelter, clothing, food, water · The Arts music, literature, drama, dance, drawings · Entertainment what people do in leisure time · Technology tools that make life/work easier · Economics money and how people get what they need · Social Structure family, community, education · Customs/Traditions activities to celebrate the culture · Religious Beliefs belief in a higher being + customs · Government how rules are set up and enforced · Background History past events, how they got here

5 Themes of Geography

Location where it is. Absolute = exact (address, latitude/longitude). Relative = compared to landmarks ("across from Brush Hollow, behind MMS").

Place physical + human features that make it unique · Region area grouped by shared traits · Movement people, goods, ideas moving · Human/Environment Interaction adapt to, change, depend on surroundings (AC, farming, dams)

Economics

Market supply and demand decide (capitalist) · Command government decides (socialist/communist) · Mixed both, like the U.S. · Traditional customs: hunting, fishing, trading

High demand + low supply = price UP. High supply + low demand = price DOWN.

Consumer buys/uses · Producer makes/supplies · Scarcity limited resources, unlimited wants · Imports come in · Exports go out

Government

Anarchy no government (Somalia 1990s) · Democracy people rule by voting (Athens) · Republic elect representatives (U.S.) · Dictatorship one person, total control (North Korea) · Theocracy religious leaders, religious law (Iran) · Monarchy king/queen, inherited (Saudi Arabia) · Oligarchy small rich/powerful group (Sparta)
